Mid 30‘s
Occupation
Green Lantern. (Intergalactic peace-keeper and police officer assigned to the sector that includes Earth). Former test pilot, former fighter pilot.
Appearance
Personalty
On first impression Hal comes across as a smart-ass who doesn’t take anything seriously. Those who are told he was a fighter pilot are rarely surprised as he appears in many ways to be the stereotypical fighter-jock.
With his easy going personality, and somewhat dry sense of humour, most people find it hard to dislike him. Others who don’t or can’t get past his outer shell tend to look down on him, questioning his attitude and professional commitment.
Those who get to know Hal better however quickly realise that the man under the hood is a kind-hearted man with very strong notions of right and wrong. This is a man who would not hesitate to sacrifice himself for friends, or a stranger, and who does his utmost to do the right thing. He doesn’t always succeed, but he always tries and never gives up.
Abilities:
Green Lantern Power ring. These rings are capable of producing almost anything the user can imagine, from a gigantic hand through force fields down to energy blasts and including the clothing worn by the user. Such objects last only as long as the user wills or can will them into existence - although this does not apply to the Green Lantern uniform. The strength of the objects or energy created is variable, and rests purely on the willpower of the user.
Note; The ring can’t create a working copy of itself.
The upper limit of the rings power is unknown. There is only one documented case of a users willpower exceeding the power in their ring while they were attempting to put a planet back together. However it is unclear if this attempt exceeded the abilities of the ring, the amount of charge left in it at that time or if it was unable to produce the required energy in the time given.
The ‘standard’ package that comes with a power ring includes;
Full flight, including faster than light travel between star systems.
A protective force-field around the user when the ring is in use. This provides a greater or lesser degree of protection against both physical and energy sources. This field is what allows the user to survive in deep space without harm - and presumably produces livable conditions inside it. The field has an automatic setting, using a small amount of the rings power set aside for it to keep it operational even if the rings charge is otherwise drained while sending out a distress call to any other Lanterns in the area.
The rings are capable of communicating with the wearer, providing information about topics the user doesn’t know, the results of scans or warning about the amount of charge left in the ring. It is not clear quite how smart the rings are, with some Lanterns suspecting they are smart enough to hide quite how intelligent they really are.
A full forensic package - meaning the ability to scan, detect and process trace evidence at a crime scene. Be that someone’s living room or deep space.
Ability to translate any known language.
The rings do seem to provide some protection against physic attacks. However it is possible that this protection has far more to do with Lanterns needing to be strong willed to use the rings that with the ring itself.
Hal is a highly skilled and trained pilot, having worked as a test pilot and before that having seen combat postings in a fighter unit. If it can be flown he can fly it.
Hal has military training, and is therefore fairly proficient in both armed and unarmed combat. This has been added to with additional training given by the Corps, resulting in a strange mixture of human and alien fighting styles that can sometimes take opponents by surprise.
Equipment:
Green Lantern Power ring, Green Lantern ‘battery’ for the ring.
Weaknesses:
Without the ring, or if he is unable to use it for some reason, Hal is only human, with all the weaknesses that come from that.
The rings can only store a limited amount of charge, apparently a safeguard installed into the rings to reduce the risk of them being misused. Under moderate use the rings hold enough power for roughly 24 hours of operation, but the exact figure depends on how heavily the ring is used. (Rings can otherwise hold a charge forever). Once drained the ring has to be recharged by pointing it at the Lantern battery and reciting the Lantern Oath;
In brightest day, in blackest night,
No evil shall escape my sight
Let those who worship evil's might,
Beware my power... Green Lantern's light!
Because the ring is powered by the will of the user, and their focus, anything that affects either of these will effect the effectiveness of the ring. In serious cases they can effectively render the ring worthless as the user can’t control it.
Although Hal is trained to use the ring, he is relatively inexperienced by Lantern standards and hasn’t yet managed to use the ring to its full capability. Thus far he tends to use the ‘standard’ abilities of the ring, and simpler forms and constructs. More complex constructs are not beyond him, but they are harder for him to manage at this point and tend to be less ‘solid’.
Background:
Hal Jordan was the second child of Martin and Jessica Jordan, and unlike his brothers shared his fathers love for flying. For the first few years of his life Hal moved from one military base to another following his father. Then Martin left the airforce and became a test pilot. This would end in tragedy several years later when Martin was killed attempting to land a damaged aircraft, an event the seven year old Hal saw unfold in front of him.
Managing to overcome his grief with help from his friends Hal went on to join the United States Airforce at the age of 18. This alienated him from his mother, who had forbid him from joining up. Before Hal was able to make an attempt to heal the rift Jessica died, this time he covered up his feelings behind a happy-go-lucky attitude.
Several years and combat deployments later Hal would follow in the footsteps of his father, becoming a test pilot himself. While his somewhat irreverent attitude hadn’t impressed everyone, his skills as a pilot were unquestioned. It was during a test flight that Hal’s life would be changed again, this time in a way he could never have imagined.
The Green Lantern Abin Sur crash-landed on Earth. Critically wounded Abin was seeking out someone to pass his ring onto. The ring brought Hal Jordan to him, plucking his aircraft out of the sky and softly dropping it next to Abin. The dying Lantern was able to outline the abilities of the ring, how to recharge it and what the Lantern Corps stood for. Then he passed the ring onto Hal.
Over the next few weeks Hal managed to keep the ring secret, while testing out its abilities. It was as well he did so, as while he was still trying to work out how to contact the Guardians the rest of the Corps came looking for Abin Sur. Initially the Lanterns thought Hal has stolen the ring - unable or unwilling to accept that the ring would have chosen a primitive human as Lantern. They had to quickly reconsider their opinion when Hal proved not only to be capable of using the ring, but was able to hold in own during a brief skirmish with the other Lanterns.
Deciding to leave the final decision to the Guardians, Hal was taken to Om. Initially sceptical at Hal’s suitability the Guardians eventually settled for allowing Hal to retain the ring while assigning him to a more experienced Lantern so they could decide if he should be added to the Corps as a full Lantern. They allowed him enough time to settle his affairs on Earth before he returned to space to train.
It took the Guardians only a few months to see Hal’s potential and worth, but they decided to keep him working alongside his fellow Lanterns for a few years more before deciding he was ready to be given the responsibility of a sector of his own.
As luck would have it the sector Hal was assigned to was 2814 - the sector that contains Earth. He was told this would be a nice quiet sector...something of a backwater by galactic standards.
They would prove to be wrong.
Base of Operations:
Hal lives in Coast City, but he gets around a lot - a few thousand miles is nothing for a guy who can travel to another galaxy after all.

“Stop in the name of the Green Lanterns!”
It hadn’t worked the first time, and Hal didn’t expect it work now. But he felt he needed to give the pirates a second chance before he dismembered their ship. Although now he was closer to it it started to dawn on him that this ship seemed a little larger than the average pirate vessel.
Hal didn’t need the ring to translate the static filled reply was along the lines of ‘screw you copper’. This was not because he was even remotely familiar with the species of the crew or the language, but because at that moment it turned and discharged every weapon its arrow-head shaped form possessed.
He threw up a clear green barrier to protect himself against direct hits, while sending green darts towards those projectile weapons that missed him so they would pose no threat to shipping now or at some point in the future. The energy blasts he could ignore, as they would dissipate long before hitting anything.
Hal sighed, willing the ring to transmit his words to the ship once again.
“Give it up guys, I can keep this up all da...”
He was cut short by the next blast, which shattered his shield with frightening ease and left him open for the volley of fire that followed it. He managed to avoid the worst of the fire, more from blind luck that judgement, but was still left somewhat dazed from the near-misses.
Not good, he barely managed to pull up a second smaller shield in time to block the next blast from the main weapon. He had no idea what they were using, or where they had got their hands on something that powerful. That was a question for later, assuming he survived because even with his full concentration he could feel the shield starting to fail.
For the briefest moment he felt fear, fear that threatened to dissolve the shield entirely. Then without conscious thought he started to speak, quietly at first and then with growing strength and conviction.
“In brightest day,” The shield stabilized, the cracks running through it stopped expanding.
“In blackest night," The shield became solid once more, the cracks now vanishing entirely.
“No evil shall escape my sight" The shield started to glow with an inner light.
“Let those who worship evil's might, Beware my power...” A green beam of energy passed through the shield, impacting the red beam from the ship and forcing it slowly backwards.
“Green Lantern's light!”
There was a beat, then the Green energy beam forced its red counterpart backwards with a blinding flash of green light. The energy ripped through the weapon mounting as if it was made of paper, then cut its way along and through the ships hull.
Hal stopped his attack before he hit those sections his ring told him were occupied. He didn’t need to do any more damage to the ship, since his first and only attack had punched the power core out through the bottom. Throwing up a much larger shield to protect the now crippled vessel from the detonation Hal waited a few seconds before transmitting another message.
“By the authority of the Green Lantern Corps you are under arrest for piracy and being so stupid you attacked a Green Lantern.”
As he started to drag the ship to the nearest port Hal signed and muttered to himself.
“Earth has got to be quieter than this”
(Notes; This bio is a hybrid of cannon Hal and some of the animated versions.
I've altered the history in an attempt to make more modern, while trying to retain the overall history from the canon version.
Likewise I've altered some of the powers of the ring in an attempt to keep Hal lower-powered than the cannon version - specifically by indicating that he is a new and relatively inexperienced Lantern - and by trying to keep the powers more logical where possible.)
